Race Starts at 9:00 a.m. sharp - we suggest arriving to East Silver Spring Elementary School between 8:00 - 8:30 a.m.

  • 8:00              Registration opens: bib & T-shirt pick-up, store coats and enjoy some pre-run/walk coffee
  • 8:30              Kids Art Project  begins and yoga/stretch provided by Blue Heron Wellness
  • 8:45              Opening remarks and starting line cue.
  • 9:00              Run/walk begins!
  • 9:00 - 10:00  Runners/walkers cross finish line (times will be captured if interested)
  • 9:00 - 10:00  As participants finish you can cheer on other runners or relax in the gym with entertainment by The Lab DC
  • 10:00- 11:00   Raffle, Closing Ceremony and Acknowledgements

note: Leo’s Run will not be chip-timed this year. We will start the clock when the race starts and will record times as participants cross the finish line.

Inclement weather

February 5th has an average high of 42 degrees with clear skies (though at 9am it will be colder!). In the event of inclement weather, the run will still be held unless there are safety concerns. In the rare case we decide to cancel the run, this will be communicated to all registered participants by email.


The school has a parking lot and there is street parking on Silver Spring Avenue.  There is a local church who uses the parking lot later Sunday mornings and we are doing our best to coordinate with them so we can both utilize the spaces.

Walking optional route - 1.86 Mile Loop

As the intention of this run/walk is to honor and celebrate Leo’s life, running or walking is encouraged.  Since it may be cold, there is an option to shorten the route for walkers.  This route still goes by the site of Leo’s memorial service and goes along the gorgeous Sligo Creek Parkway.  It eliminates the cut-back at Wayne Avenue as well as the last mile along Thayer and Silver Spring Aves by going up the stairs from Thayer Avenue to the school.  The overall route is 1.86 miles.  For more information visit the Details page


Safety is a huge priority for us at Leo’s Run.  Since there will not be any road closures, we ask that all walkers and runners stay aware of their surroundings at all times.  There will be volunteers at every major street crossing as well as some of the smaller crossings.  If you see someone in need, or are in need of assistance yourself, please ask the volunteers.  They can help get in touch with the chief safety office or Montgomery Country Police.

Post Race

We will have an acknowledgement ceremony at the gym around 10am. We have use of the gym until 12 noon sharp, but must remove everything we’ve brought in to set up.  If you are willing to stick around and assist with clean up, please just make it known on race day. 


Leo’s Run will not be chip-timed. The course is USATF certified as a 5k. We will start the clock when the race starts and will have someone recording times as participants finish the run.  We will have an acknowledgement ceremony at 10am.
