DETAILS

The fourth annual 5k run/walk to honor Leo Michael Mowery

Beneficiary

Leo’s Run is a small operation which aims to cover it’s costs.  Any additional funds will be channeled into Leo’s Garden, a 501(c)3 non profit, which not only includes the race, but also aspires to start a scholarship for children whose parents have experienced pre-natal loss (i.e. the recipient will have lost a sibling), and supporting and sponsoring creative and artistic activities or therapies such as yoga, art, and outdoor education as a means of promoting the well-being of families who have suffered still birth or infant or other tragic loss.  As we continue to grieve and the organization grows, we also aim to find additional ways to help others who have experienced such a tragic loss.

About the Course

Leo’s run 5k run/walk starts at East Silver Spring Elementary School (631 Silver Spring Ave), heads down to Sligo Creek Parkway, passing the site of Leo’s Memorial Service, where the run meanders along the beautiful Sligo Creek.  Runners will U-Turn at Wayne Avenue and head into the neighborhood and returns to the school along the street where Leo would have been raised.  There will be water and hot chocolate approximately half way along the course.  The 5k is a USATF certified course.

Alternate Walking Course

As the intention of this run/walk is to honor and celebrate Leo’s life, running or walking is encouraged.  Since it may be cold, there is an option to shorten the route for walkers.  This route still goes by the site of Leo’s memorial service and goes along the gorgeous Sligo Creek Parkway.  It eliminates the cut-back at Wayne Avenue as well as the last mile along Thayer and Silver Spring Aves by going up the stairs from Thayer Avenue to the school.  The overall route is 1.86 miles.  There will be volunteers on the course informing participants of these options.
